Get creative with The Prompt

Each month The Prompt is tumblr page that showcase a collaborative group of creative artists, writers, colourists & letters who experiment & test their limits of comic storytelling over a single page. Each month a theme is set and The Prompt begins.

Nic J Shaw, creator of The Prompt says
"This is about collaboration, creativity, learning, and most of all, fun. It's about apply yourself, try something new, do something different, work with someone you might not know. You can learn a lot from others, make use of your collaborators, asking questions of each other and discussing their pages."

This month’s prompt:

The first line of your story: “He didn’t want to go out on a night like this but…”

  • Find a page from a comic you love and deconstruct it.
  • Use this as the foundations for your script.
  • You can change the character, the scene, and the setting, but the main elements of the page must be there, including panel structure. What you need to decide is what about this page appeals to you so much. What is it that makes that page a piece of great story telling?

The One Page Walrus by Harry Moyer & Jon Westhoff

The Rules are simple:
  1. Create a single page, closed story—beginning, middle, and end.
  2. The opening line of your story must be “He didn't want to go out on a night like this but…” ---“He” can be replaced with “She,” “It,” “They,” etc…
  3. With your submission please post the page you deconstructed and a little brief about why you chose that particular page.
  4. You MUST work with a new creator for this prompt.
  5. This is a hard deadline. No submissions will be accepted after the 31st of March.
  6. Feel free to post progress on the group page. Please send final works to nic.shaw@live.com
  7. Both Colour and Black & White are acceptable.
  8. Each collaborated page should be drawn at 11 x 17 so it can be shrunk down to standard US comic size, should we decide to print. Please use the correct bleed and trim. Remember your live area is only 6.25 x 9.75. Portrait or Landscape pages are welcome.

The work achieved on each page is inspiring and at a level you'd expect in any comic you might purchase. To check out the mad collaborative skills from these creative teams or to participate check out The Prompt here
